Research Proposal & Book Design
This book is a personal project which turns my university research proposal into a visual piece, exploring graphic prop design and branding with a film inspired colour palette and typography.
To begin the process of designing this book, I went back to my research proposal and looked at what images I had, potential pull quotes and the chapters that I would need. This helped me when creating the grid for the book.
When creating the grid I kept in mind that I would need to place images of film scenes in columns of three and so I designed accordingly. I also ensured I had a hangline as there is a lot of text and so this all needed to be in line on each page to ensure readers could best follow along. In addition to this, I divided the text to be placed into two side by side columns which would allow for happy reading and not too much long text, particularly when considering the subject matter is an essay, the visual aids for understanding is crucial.
After creating my grid I went on to sketch layout ideas with the consideration of my grid and content. Here, I also began to think about what kind of design I wanted and possible cover names and ideas too.
As the copy was a particularly important part of the design I laid this all out before creating more designed elements. This was to ensure the text was legible and that I had the correct amount of page numbers for printing.
As my proposal has many chapters I wanted to create very ornate and decorative numbers for my splash pages, to separate the proposal and ensure a reader-friendly design.
As the numbers are so decorative, for the body text I used sans-serif Avenir however, for pull quotes I decided to use another more decorative font to push myself and further explore my use of typography.
