Book cover design

Dara McAnulty’s book Diary of a Young Naturalist is an adult non-fiction novel written in the form of diary entries, which entwines themes of nature, family and
mental health.
Inspired by the contents and themes of the book, the idea was to reflect the text’s diary format through the use of scribbled textures and handwriting. Combining this with imagery of ferns, dandelions, wild garlic and more; the cover aims to illustrate and emphasise the importance of nature within Dara’s life. The type is raw with each letter unique, using the imagery to create a sense of cohesion across the cover and reflect the author’s comfort in patterns and repetition.
The process of this project was very experimental both in method and material. I read and analysed the chosen book and, using the themes found from this as inspiration for the experiments, I created a range of different design routes.
From printing, to illustration, to paper models, I played with a variety of design concepts before choosing a route to refine.
