Film Poster Design
For this project, I designed the poster for the upcoming film 'Juniper' which is to be shown at the BFI film festival 2021. The design will also feature as the official poster on the film's IMDB page as well as promoting the film for the festival.
Katrina, the director of Juniper, provided me with some sketches of what she had in mind for the poster. From this, I created my own sketches of what I thought would work well.
The style the director had in mind was this flat colour illustration, minimalistic design.
These were the first drafts I created. I decided to use a red and black colour palette as I felt this worked best to represent the story of Juniper.
Katrina noted that the climax of the film is when the protagonist follows red string down the manhole to uncover his past, because of this, I used an outlined hand which connected to a subtle piece of red string, bringing storytelling into the design.
The second batch I created worked on feedback from Katrina, the director. She noted that while she liked the design she wanted to keep it to a more night-time theme as this is when the story
takes place.
Using the colours of Juniper berries I took this on board. I wanted to also experiment with the layout and so I worked with isometric illustration to create a more compelling composition which featured the street and lamp post.
After a range of colour experiments we decided that black and yellow worked best to communicate the film.
Katrina had provided typography which had a smoke image clipping mask however, I felt this was far too busy and much less legible than having a bold, stand-out typeface. Therefore, I decided to use block colour to match the minimalistic design and flat illustration used within the poster.
When coming to the final stages of the design, I continued my experimentation of colour as well as layout, adding in the final details including the names and the logos required to ensure everything worked well together.
After creating the final layout I was not happy with the placement of the hand and so, I decided to create some further hand studies to make sure I got the placement and angle correct.
The final outcome uses a limited colour palette and flat illustration to create a striking poster for the upcoming film 'Juniper'.
